Where SEO, Search Intelligence and Search Governance fit.
These definitions establish the organisational containers, external environments and distinct disciplines that make up the SI architecture. Start here when a familiar term is being asked to perform several different jobs.
1. Organic Marketing
Business function · SI-DEF-001It is the business function that manages how non-paid and earned digital activity contributes to growth and customer confidence.
Organic Marketing is the managed organisational function responsible for building, coordinating and governing unpaid and earned digital visibility, trust, influence, demand and long-term authority.
Where it fits: It is the organisational container within which Search Governance, Search Intelligence and execution disciplines are coordinated toward business outcomes.
Organic Search, SEO, content, digital PR, reviews, reputation, organic social, thought leadership, product information, source-of-truth management, AI discoverability, conversion experience and authority development.
A synonym for SEO, Organic Search or all marketing. Paid media may support it, but paid placement is not its defining mechanism.
Reported through visibility, trust, influence, demand, authority, risk, action closure and value-realisation indicators.
Creates a named business function through which organic growth can receive strategy, budget, risk oversight, decision rights and operating cadence.
2. SEO
Execution discipline · SI-DEF-002SEO improves how websites and other managed assets can be found, understood and used through search.
SEO is a core execution and optimisation discipline used to improve the eligibility, discoverability, interpretation, presentation and performance of digital assets within search-engine experiences.
Where it fits: SEO acts within Organic Search and is one of several execution disciplines that respond to Search Intelligence and governance priorities.
Crawl and index management, rendering, information architecture, internal linking, content relevance, metadata, structured data, search appearance, page experience, authority inputs, measurement and remediation.
Not limited to rankings. Not Search Intelligence, Search Governance, the whole customer decision environment or an executive control system.
Technical eligibility, ranking, search appearance, traffic, engagement and implementation outcomes. SEO metrics alone don't prove trust, influence or governance effectiveness.
Clear role definition prevents SI from replacing execution teams and prevents SEO from being expected to provide executive governance.
3. Organic Search
External environment · SI-DEF-003It is what customers find through unpaid search experiences.
Organic Search is the unpaid visibility, discovery and engagement environment created through search systems, and the outcome space in which SEO work is expressed.
Where it fits: Broader than SEO but narrower than the Organic Search and Discovery Environment.
Traditional ranked results, local, image, video and news results, knowledge and featured results, and unpaid supporting links in AI-enabled search experiences.
Excludes paid placements; does not automatically include every review, publisher article, marketplace page or standalone AI response outside a search experience.
Presence, eligibility, search appearance, query coverage, result ownership, engagement and downstream contribution, with limitations clearly stated.
The environment organisations must manage beyond isolated SEO tasks because it shapes discovery, validation and demand.
4. Organic Search and Discovery Environment
External environment · SI-DEF-004It is the wider set of places people use to find, compare and validate a brand without the encounter being principally purchased as advertising.
The Organic Search and Discovery Environment is the network of unpaid and earned search, AI, content, knowledge, comparison, reputation and technical surfaces through which customers discover, evaluate and develop confidence in an organisation before commercial action.
Where it fits: Contains Organic Search and sits inside the wider Search-Driven Customer Decision Environment.
Organic results, AI-generated search answers, knowledge surfaces, reviews, ratings, comparisons, publisher content, forums, marketplaces, product information, source-of-truth content and technical experience signals.
Not every possible brand touchpoint — only surfaces that materially participate in search-led discovery, evaluation or validation.
Exposure states, encounter indicators, Search Moment evidence, narrative representation, competitive occupation and technical integrity.
Gives SI a defensible scope broad enough to govern modern unpaid and earned discovery without relabelling all digital activity as Organic Search.
5. Search-Driven Customer Decision Environment
External decision environment · SI-DEF-005It is the full environment through which search helps a customer move from uncertainty towards or away from a choice.
The Search-Driven Customer Decision Environment is the widest network of search, AI, content, reputation, comparison, technical and conversion experiences that shape customer confidence, preference and action before the business observes the commercial outcome.
Where it fits: The widest external environment observed by Search Intelligence and governed through Search Governance.
The Organic Search and Discovery Environment and any materially connected paid, owned, retailer, adviser or offline evidence that enters the search-led decision journey.
Excludes touchpoints with no material connection to the customer's search, evaluation or decision process.
The progression from uncertainty to exposure, encounter, Search Moment, decision state, decision moment and business outcome.
Keeps SI anchored in customer decisions rather than in channel metrics alone.
6. Search Intelligence
Intelligence discipline · SI-DEF-006It explains what is happening in the wider environment and what leadership should understand.
Search Intelligence is the disciplined observation and human interpretation of search-driven evidence to establish what is changing, why it matters, where risk or opportunity exists and what is materially important to the organisation.
Where it fits: Sits between external evidence and Search Governance, translating detection into decision-relevant understanding.
Whole-market observation, competitive analysis, commercial-intent analysis, demand leakage, trust signals, technical integrity, AI narrative interpretation, evidence capture, materiality and early warning.
Does not replace specialist execution, make final client decisions or claim certainty beyond the evidence.
Outputs show evidence source, period, scope, method, status, limitations and confidence — classified Observed, Inferred, Modelled, Validated or Unknown.
Gives leadership an independent view of material exposure before ownership and action are determined.
7. Search Governance
Governance operating system · SI-DEF-007It is how the organisation turns search evidence into accountable decisions and action.
Search Governance is the organisational operating system used to identify, own, prioritise, decide, respond to and learn from search-driven commercial exposure.
Where it fits: Receives interpreted evidence from Search Intelligence and coordinates the organisational response across specialist execution functions.
Ownership, decision rights, materiality thresholds, risk classification, escalation, governance cadence, evidence trails, decision logs, action tracking, accepted risk, outcome review and value realisation.
Does not control Google, algorithms, competitors or customer choice. Does not replace execution teams or assume the client's final decision authority.
Material items, ownership, decisions, action status, escalation, closure, residual exposure, value and learning.
Makes search-driven exposure governable as a business responsibility rather than leaving it as unowned marketing activity.
