A competitor does not need to beat you everywhere.

Another source may be capturing the decision space your organisation needed to hold.

Competitive Displacement occurs when a competitor, aggregator, publisher, retailer or other source occupies or wins a materially relevant position across visibility, trust, influence, preference or demand.

The formal definition

Competitive Displacement is the loss or reduction of an organisation’s visibility, trust, influence, preference or demand position because another source occupies or wins the relevant decision environment.

Competitor presence alone is not displacement. A materially relevant loss of position or influence must exist.

Where displacement develops

Five points along the same progression.

These stages can overlap. An organisation may retain visibility while losing trust, influence and demand.

Visibility displacement

The competitor appears for a materially relevant need and the organisation does not.

Trust displacement

Both appear, but the competitor provides clearer evidence, stronger reassurance or more credible third-party proof.

Influence displacement

The competitor, publisher or platform defines the criteria through which the customer evaluates the category.

Demand displacement

The customer progresses into another organisation's quote, application, purchase, booking or enquiry pathway.

Authority displacement

Repeated visibility, evidence and influence make another source the recognised reference for the category.

Displaced Search Exposure occurs when
Competitors occupy category results; aggregators dominate comparisons
Publishers define the category; retailers control discovery
AI systems recommend alternatives; review platforms occupy branded validation
The organisation is absent from a relevant set

It creates a reduced opportunity to influence. It does not prove final competitor capture.

Confidence transfer
Customer encounters organisation
Customer continues comparing
Another source provides stronger evidence
Confidence moves, alternative becomes preferred

One organisation may create the demand while another captures it.

Sources of displacement

Competitive intelligence is not imitation, the goal is understanding where and why confidence moves, not copying a competitor's tactics.
