Follow the signal, not the noise: How SI determines materiality
Search produces endless motion. Positions change. Competitors appear and disappear. AI answers vary. Reviews accumulate. Technical tools produce warnings. Teams can spend an extraordinary amount of time reacting to activity that does not change the customer or commercial outcome.
Materiality is the discipline that protects attention.
Noise is not the same as useless data
A signal may be weak today and important later. Noise is not simply "bad data". It is evidence that does not yet justify the level of response being considered. The task is to decide which side of six lines the condition falls on.
The materiality lenses
Eight lenses, one inspectable judgement.
A small issue may be the material one
The small issue is often the material one.
Materiality asks what the condition can change, not how impressive the metric movement looks.
A materiality review in practice
Three findings in one month. Only one is material.
A blog article drops from position four to nine.
A high-value quote page moves from position two to five on mobile in one region.
A technical crawler reports 400 low-priority metadata warnings.
The largest number is 400. The material condition is the regional quote page — it affects a high-intent journey and coincides with a competitor's stronger local evidence.
Marketing may see acquisition impact. Product may see customer understanding. Technology may see system risk. Risk may see public or assurance exposure. Finance may see value at risk. SEO may see portfolio movement. No single lens is sufficient, the governance process should preserve the specialist view while establishing one organisational judgement.
A Medium condition can become High when it persists, spreads, approaches a campaign launch or gains stronger evidence. A High condition can become Low when the exposure is reduced or the affected Product is retired. Materiality is a reviewed state, not a permanent label.
